Types of Vegetarians
Types of Vegetarians
> Total Vegetarians
Eat only plant food. They do not eat any animal foods, including fish, eggs, dairy products, and honey.
> Vegans
Vegans are those that reject all forms of animal products, including dairy and eggs. There are two kinds of vegans, ethical and dietary strict. The first is one who eliminates everything animal related be it clothes, accessories, food, and products tested on animals. The second type of vegan is one who eliminates animal produce from their diet alone.
>Fruitarians
This one is easy to figure out, fruitarians indulge in food sources that qualify as fruits. They will also include seeds and nuts into their diet in some cases. The fruitarian will avoid grains, veggies and animal produce. Some do not eat peas, legumes or beans, while others avoid grains because they consider them to be unnatural. Even seeds are avoided by some because they feel like that impedes the growth of new life if the seed is consumed. Others believe in only eating fruits that falls from trees and harvested in a way that doesn't require the killing or harm of the plant.
> Lacto-ovo Vegetarians
This type of vegetarian excludes all meat and eats vegetable based food. They incorporate eggs, dairy products, cheese, and butter into their diet as well.
> Lacto Vegetarians
These vegetarians are often called lactarians because they allow dairy into their diet along with primarily vegetable based foods. They also exclude foods that contain gelatin (which is made from the connective tissue of animals) and rennet. There are substitutes for animal rennet that are vegetable-based which makes it allowable for the lacto vegetarian diet.
> Ovo Vegetarians
This type of vegetarian doesn't eat any meat or dairy products of any kind but includes eggs. They normally prefer to consume free range eggs as opposed to those that are produced from caged hens. Even unfertilized eggs are avoided since eggs are consumed while the embryo is still very much alive (balut)
> Pescetarian
Pescetarians consume whatever they wish except meat of all kinds. Although they will eat fish, shellfish, dairy and eggs. Some are opposed to calling this a type of vegetarian diet since fish is considered a form of “white meat.”
> Flexitarians
This is also called semi-vegetarianism because flexitarians will choose to eat meal on occasion.
> Pollo Vegetarians
The pollotarian is one that will consume both poultry and in some cases fish.
> Raw-Food Diet
Some vegetarians will eat only raw foods with the idea that many of the important vitamins and nutrients in food are destroyed in the cooking process. Those who follow a raw-food diet believe that uncooked fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds is healthier and better
